Zanzibar’s

History

Zanzibar is one of the most famous holiday spots on Africa’s east coast, rich in history and surrounded by beautiful islands. The archipelago includes Unguja (Zanzibar) Island in the south, Pemba Island in the north, and smaller islands like Tumbatu and Kojani. The total land area of the two main islands is 4,891 sq km, and the population is around 1.9 million.

Though politically part of Tanzania, Zanzibar enjoys autonomy in managing its economic affairs. The islands are famous for their Swahili culture, and in the 18th century, Zanzibar was a hub for trading ivory, spices, and slaves. It attracted traders and merchants from Asia and beyond, making Zanzibar a melting pot of cultures. The result is a rich blend of history and culture, which visitors can experience today.

Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches and warm, turquoise waters, along with its colorful marine life and coral reefs, make it a dream for swimmers, divers, and nature lovers.
